The Telecommunications Act of 1996 is the first major reconstruction of the telecommunications law in almost 62 years. The goal of this new law is to let anyone enter any communications business (to let any communications business compete in any market against any other.) The Act has the potential to change the way we work, live and learn. It affected telephone service (local and long distance,) cable programming and other video services, broadcast services, and services provided to schools

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 was finally passed, after twelve years of Congress carefully minimizing its responsibilities in the most important areas. This major change received considerable media and press attention.

Real competition in the consumer market requires a lage investment, first to build the right foundation (it is a lot more than hanging wires on poles), then to create a mass marketing campaign. The result became a silent truce between local telephone and cable companies, and a battle for local service between the regional Bell companies and the long distance providers: AT&T, MCI and Sprint.

What costumers should expect over the next few years

*Cable TV rates will rise.

*Local telephone rates will go down for business customers.

Television & Radio

Regulation of radio (eventually become television too) broadcasting generally dates back to 1912 with the passage of the Radio Communications Act. The main purpose of this act was to tell radio stations to obtain licenses from the Department of Commerce and Labor for broadcasting purposes.
